DIY Cat

Tonights project involved reorganizing the front foyer closet, as well as cleaning up the kitchen, which is not very exciting to say the least. The interesting part about the kitchen is that there is this randomly sized window, which we purchased a sheer curtain for when we first moved in. It was way too long, so for the most part we've left it tied up and out of the way, because having a curtain in the sink while doing the dishes isn't exactly our idea of a good time.

Anyways! I was seized by the opportunity to utilize my heat and bond tape again, as it is the perfect excuse not to sew. Why sew when Heat N Bond will do the work for you?

So, there I am, on top of the kitchen counter, tugging down the curtain, as Tygg meows at me to make sure that I'm not just fooling around up there like I always tell him not to. I get the curtain down and all spread out, ready to take a photo, when Tygg decides he is the new DIY cat. He's now all over the curtain, rolling around, just being absolutely ridiculous. I now need to wash said curtain, so I give up on the photos for the time being.

DIY Bench

So, while Si is at camp, I've undertaken a redesign of the house. It's only the first day, and I've started with cleaning, and at 11:30am, I've already been to two stores, purchased foam, fabric, and spraypaint, and begun my own cushioned bench. Why a bench you might ask? Well, our foyer is quite empty, and in the winter (and summer), it drives me crazy to balance on one foot while trying to get my shoes off and get comfortable. A bench, I think, might do the trick.

To make your own bench - here are the steps:

First, I already had a table I had purchased way back in high school, for $4 at a garage sale. I'd previously covered it with a black sheet in order to cover it up, but now, I'm looking to uncover it and jazz it up. Here's what it looked like when I started:

I purchased a can of black spray paint, and after I got through the first coat, it already looked ten times better. Check it out below:

After applying two more coats of spray paint, I moved on to the cushioning phase. Because I'm using a light fabric color, I went for a white foam, and it just happens that the table is about the same length as the foam that they make for baby bumpers (and they come 5 to a pack at JoAnns Fabrics!). Here's what it looked like when I started laying on the cushioning:

I put two layers on the bench - not because it was super necessary, but if we ever have to use it for additional seating, I want to ensure that it's comfortable enough. After the cushioning was fitted (I hot glued it down to secure it), I flipped the table over onto the fabric that I had previously chosen. 20 staples later, and here we are!

There was some remnant fabric left over, so instead of letting it go to waste, I quickly whipped up some adorable pillows to tie in the living room with the foyer. Since I don't have a sewing machine, I used HeatnBond Ultra Strength bonding tape, which only requires an iron and minor skill. Here's what the completed pillows look like:

And here's the bench in it's new space!

The Beginning

So, the first part of our story begins with meeting for drinks one night after work, and then driving around Rochester, stopping at the Harbor Freight to pick up some tools I'd need to fix my car during the weekend, as well as wandering around after hours in an amazing little park right on Calkins road. To this day, it's still our favorite park.

Saturday, we wander around RIT and the UofR, perhaps being the first student-ish people in the new SAU, and wandering around UofR just playing and goofing around.

Sunday, I woke up bright and early to fix my valve cover gasket before my parents came in to town to drop my middle brother off at RIT. Had a bit of trouble/wanted to get Silas to come over, so I gave him a call in the middle of the repair. There I am, covered in oil when Silas pulls up, and I've managed to fix the problem I was having about ten seconds earlier. We finish up the repair and my car "looks" like it's no longer leaking oil - hooray! We head inside for what is to be one of many fantastic breakfasts, and then we head out - me to meet my parents at RIT, and Si to hang out around Rochester.

Soon after getting my brother moved in, we have to go get him the RIT orientation and welcome packets in the Field House. As we're wandering down, we run into Silas on the way, hanging out on the side of the quarter mile. We hang out for a little while, and make plans to see each other again soon.

That night, I receive a call requesting my presence at Wellington, Si's old place, and that's where it begins. There's a pillow fight, a kiss, and the rest, is history.
